Dear Friends,
When I heard the news of the devastating earthquake in Haiti and I noticed the death toll rising, I felt a pain that I could not explain. As the days passed and the news came in, I noticed that many of the injured suffered from broken arms and legs and other orthopedic injuries. Yet, because of the lack of the most basic medical/orthopedic supplies, the very supplies we stock in every hospital of this country, people were suffering from infections, amputations and even death. This bothered me so deeply that I knew, I just had to do something.
We worked for over two months to supply the doctors on the ground in Les Cayes with equipment and supplies. Hundreds were then given medical care and we served thousands of meals to nourish the sick and the hungry. Still, we have an opportunity to make an even greater difference in the lives of those who are suffering the most.
We cannot succeed without your help.
Have a great night.
Sincerely,
Roger Williams
The effects of the January 12, 2010 earthquake reached farther than the areas that were destroyed and damaged. Hundreds of thousands died and tens of thousands more were injured. However, there were hundreds of thousands of others who survived the devastation.
Many families lost loved ones, others their businesses and many others lost their homes and all of their possessions. Due to a lack of food, water and housing, these families left the devastated areas and went to live with friends and loved ones in other areas of Haiti. Specifically, tens of thousands settled in Les Cayes, the third largest city in Haiti. The area saw a rise of over 100,000 people within a month of the earth-quake.
Thousands came seeking medical attention, shelter and food.
This is where we found a place to serve. With an already burdened economy the areas hospitals and social service groups were inundated with a rise in needs. Food became expensive and scarce, gas stations ran dry and construction materials could not be delivered from the north. Those that fled the devastation in the north found themselves starving once again and many decided to leave the south and take their chances back in Port Au Prince. We could not let that happen.
We got to work right away. We used our planes for delivering needed medical supplies and transferring patients who needed delicate surgical care to other hospitals in Haiti where American teams of medical professionals were on the ground and ready to save the lives of those in need. We made sure that no person who suffered in the earthquake was forced to pay for their medical attention or food.
Within weeks we had already delivered thousands of pounds of food, clothing and medical supplies.
Most importantly we brought hope or ‘ESPWA’ to thousands who saw nothing but desperation and suffering in their future.
One group of the Haitian population was already without access to adequate food, medical care and an education before the earthquake. They are the over 400,000 estimated child slaves (RETAVEKS) and 500,000 orphaned children. After January 12 their situation just got worse and the numbers across the country grew by tens of thousands.
